WOOD OR PELLETS: THE HYBRID STOVE BURNS BOTH
A wood and pellet hybrid stove burns both wood and pellets: whoever installs one does not have to choose one fuel once and for all. Klover makes three hybrid stoves: DUAL 10s, DUAL 17 and BI-FIRE MID 17. All three Klover hybrid stoves connect to a single flue.
The Klover data sheets describe the two fuels by what each brings into the home. The DUAL 17 sheet speaks of the freedom of wood combined with the continuity of pellets; the BI-FIRE MID 17 sheet of the autonomy of pellets together with the intensity of wood. In the hybrid stove the pellets come from the pellet tank, while the wood is loaded into its own combustion chamber.
DUAL 10s heats the room where it is installed. DUAL 17 and BI-FIRE MID 17 are thermo hybrid stoves: they connect to the heating system with the standard hydraulic kit, and their heat goes partly to the water of the system and partly to the room.
HOW A HYBRID STOVE WITH TWO COMBUSTION CHAMBERS WORKS
DUAL 10s has two independent combustion chambers, one for wood and one for pellets. The data sheet states that DUAL 10s heats the home with wood or pellets, separately or combined, and that the combined mode makes it possible to double the heat output.
Switching from one fuel to the other is handled by the automatic combustion management, which the DUAL 10s sheet describes as a smooth transition between wood and pellets. Both chambers of DUAL 10s are lined with Keramik HD refractory, for thermal efficiency and low emissions.
On the pellet side DUAL 10s has the self-cleaning burn pot, for consistently steady combustion, and Pellet Cruise Control, which adjusts the power automatically. DUAL 10s is operated with a touch remote control with a built-in chronothermostat.
HOW MUCH A WOOD AND PELLET HYBRID STOVE HEATS
DUAL 10s declares 9.3 kW of nominal heat output on pellets and 8.7 kW on wood, with an efficiency of 90% on pellets and 85.6% on wood. The declared heating area of DUAL 10s is 90 m² on pellets and 85 m² on wood.
DUAL 10s spreads heat in two ways: the SOFT mode, with natural radiant heat, and the AIR mode, with active ventilation. The flame can be seen through the high-temperature ceramic glass. DUAL 10s measures 90x50x120 cm and weighs 280 kg; the flue outlet has a diameter of 150 mm.
DUAL 17 declares 14.7 kW on pellets, of which 11.4 kW to water and 3.3 kW to the room, and 11.3 kW on wood, of which 6.5 kW to water and 4.8 kW to the room. The efficiency of DUAL 17 is 93% on pellets and 91% on wood, for a heating area of 150 m² on pellets and 100 m² on wood.
BI-FIRE MID 17 declares the same split on wood, 6.5 kW to water and 4.8 kW to the room, with an efficiency of 91.9%; on pellets the declared efficiency is 93%. The heating area of BI-FIRE MID 17 is also 150 m² on pellets and 100 m² on wood.
THE THERMO HYBRID STOVE CONNECTED TO THE HEATING SYSTEM
DUAL 17 and BI-FIRE MID 17 are thermo hybrid stoves: they carry the heat of wood and pellets to the heating system of the home. The hydraulic kit with circulator is standard on both.
The circuit is protected by Sistema Sicuro Top, which is based on the bain-marie principle and keeps the circuit at zero pressure. The BI-FIRE MID 17 sheet adds that Sistema Sicuro Top protects the system and ensures stable operation over time.
In DUAL 17 and BI-FIRE MID 17 the pellets are held in a 30 kg pellet tank, the controls run through a touchscreen display and the combustion air control is automatic. DUAL 17 measures 87x63x110 cm and weighs 330 kg; BI-FIRE MID 17 measures 82x60x108 cm and weighs 340 kg. The flue outlet of both has a diameter of 180 mm.
COLORS AND DESIGN OF KLOVER HYBRID STOVES
DUAL 17 and BI-FIRE MID 17 come in the colors Avorio, Terra di Siena, Bordeaux and Matt Black. DUAL 17 has a majolica and painted steel cladding and double-glazed doors. BI-FIRE MID 17 has a majolica cladding or a majolica and painted steel cladding, in a vertical presence that the data sheet calls essential and elegant.
DUAL 10s is available in the finishes Matt Black, Soap Stone and Moka, and the data sheet suggests it for modern spaces, contemporary living areas and reinterpreted classic interiors. The three Klover hybrid stoves are made in Italy.
