WOOD STOVE WITHOUT A CHIMNEY: THERE IS ALWAYS A FLUE PIPE

A wood stove always has a flue pipe, but it does not necessarily need a chimney already built into the building. A wood stove without a pipe does not exist: burning wood produces fumes, and the pipe carries them out of the house. In a house without a chimney, the search is for a different route for the pipe, and that route is set by a technician.

The twelve Klover wood stoves state the diameter of the flue outlet in their data sheet, that is, the size of the connection the pipe is attached to: 130 mm on ten models and 150 mm on two. The diameter is a property of the stove. The route of the pipe after the stove is a property of the house, and it changes from one building to another.

WOOD STOVE WITHOUT A CHIMNEY: HOW THE DRAFT WORKS

In a wood stove the fumes leave because they are hot and lighter than the air in the room. Rising in the pipe, they create the draft, the pull that carries the fumes outside and draws into the combustion chamber the air that feeds the flame. This air is called combustion air, and the data sheets of the twelve Klover wood stoves describe a combustion air control to manage the combustion.

This is why the route of the pipe weighs on how a wood stove works: a vertical section supports the draft, while bends and horizontal sections slow it down. With insufficient draft the combustion is less regular, and the wood stove does not heat as its data sheet states. The draft does not depend on the stove alone: it depends on the whole route of the fumes, up to the point where they reach the open air.

WOOD STOVES WITHOUT A CHIMNEY: THE WALL EXHAUST

A wall exhaust is the installation in which the flue pipe passes through the wall and exits outside the building, instead of rising inside an internal chimney. For a wood stove, which works with the draft, what happens after the wall also counts: the section of pipe outside, its height and the point where the fumes are released. In some cases the draft is assisted by a fan, and this is called forced draft.

The conditions are checked by a technician: the condominium rules and the municipal regulations, the height and position of the fume outlet, the installer's project. The most common route of the fumes leads above the roof of the building, and a wall exhaust remains a solution to be checked before choosing the wood stove, not after.

For anyone looking for wood stoves without a chimney, there is therefore no list of models suitable in advance: the answer depends on the house, and the technician gives it after the site inspection.

THE FLUE OUTLET DIAMETER OF KLOVER WOOD STOVES

The data sheets of the Klover wood stoves state a 130 mm flue outlet on MISS WOOD, MISS WOOD STONE and MISS WOOD PLUS, on OLYMPIA, OLYMPIA STONE and OLYMPIA PLUS, on VENUS 90s CLASSIC, VENUS 110s and VENUS 110s PLUS and on KUOKI 110s. SWISS and SWISS CORE state a 150 mm flue outlet.

The diameter of the flue outlet tells which pipe the wood stove connects to, not where the pipe can go. The data sheets do not state the type of exhaust: the technician starts from the diameter to design the route to the outside.

The data sheets of VENUS 90s CLASSIC, VENUS 110s and VENUS 110s PLUS also mention a set-up for double rear ducting. It concerns the warm air that heats other rooms, not the fumes, and it is described in the article on the ducted wood burning stove.

OUTPUT AND AREA: WOOD STOVE AND PIPE ARE CHOSEN TOGETHER

The Klover wood stoves state a nominal heat output with wood from 5.9 kW to 9.4 kW, an efficiency from 85.2% to 92% and a heated area from 60 m² to 110 m². The three versions of MISS WOOD state 60 m², VENUS 90s CLASSIC 75 m², SWISS and SWISS CORE 80 m², VENUS 110s and VENUS 110s PLUS 95 m², the three versions of OLYMPIA 100 m² and KUOKI 110s 110 m².

The stated heated area applies with dry wood, a compliant fume exhaust and a home with average insulation. The output of the wood stove and the route of the pipe are decided together, with the same technician, on the real data of the house.

In short, a wood stove always has a flue pipe, even when the building has no chimney, and the draft makes the route of the pipe part of the project. A wall exhaust is a solution that only a technician can declare possible in a specific house.
