WHICH WOOD BURNING STOVE TO CHOOSE FOR AN APARTMENT

A wood burning stove for an apartment is chosen starting from three facts: the area to be heated, the space available in the living room and the chimney flue. Klover wood burning stoves declare a heating area between 60 m² and 110 m² and a nominal heat output between 5.9 kW and 9.4 kW.

For a living room, one reference in the range is the VENUS 90s CLASSIC wood burning stove: 7.7 kW of nominal heat output, 75 m² of heating area and an efficiency of 92%, in a footprint of 72x46x78 cm for 145 kg. The VENUS 90s CLASSIC has a combustion chamber in Keramik HD refractory, highly efficient and long lasting, and a single combustion air control.

Whatever the model, a wood burning stove only works when connected to a chimney flue that meets regulations. In an apartment this is the first thing to check, even before choosing the stove.

HOW MANY KW ARE NEEDED TO HEAT THE LIVING ROOM

The heating area declared on Klover product sheets states how many square meters a wood burning stove heats with dry wood, a compliant chimney flue and an averagely insulated home. When the living room is open to the kitchen, the square meters to consider are those of the whole space, not only the sofa area.

Klover wood burning stoves cover this scale. MISS WOOD declares 5.9 kW and 60 m². VENUS 90s CLASSIC declares 7.7 kW and 75 m². SWISS declares 8.7 kW and 80 m². VENUS 110s declares 8.4 kW and 95 m². OLYMPIA, with its oven, declares 9.4 kW and 100 m². KUOKI 110s, also with an oven, declares 8.4 kW and 110 m².

A wood burning stove more powerful than needed does not heat the living room better: it brings the room to a temperature that is too high and forces the combustion air to be reduced. The precise calculation is made by the technician on the real data of the home. How to go from square meters to kW is explained in the article on the wood burning stove for 100 m².

HOW HEAT TRAVELS FROM THE LIVING ROOM TO OTHER ROOMS

A wood burning stove first heats the room it stands in. To carry heat beyond the living room, the VENUS 90s CLASSIC, VENUS 110s and VENUS 110s PLUS are prepared for double rear ducting, which the product sheet describes as the way to heat more rooms. On all three, double front ventilation is available as an option and spreads heat evenly in the room where the stove stands.

MISS WOOD has front ventilation as an option, for an even distribution of heat. SWISS comes standard with front ventilation and a micro-perforated steel top, which together with the high-density technical stoneware cladding encourages natural air convection.

On the VENUS 90s CLASSIC and VENUS 110s, the Keramik HD refractory combustion chamber works with the ember bed system, for steady combustion. In an apartment, where the wood burning stove stands in the living area, steady combustion means regular heat through the evening hours.

WHAT IS NEEDED TO INSTALL A WOOD BURNING STOVE IN AN APARTMENT

A wood burning stove without a chimney flue does not exist. In an apartment, installation starts by checking the existing chimney flue, or the possibility of building one, and the rules of the building. The flue outlet diameter is 130 mm on the VENUS 90s CLASSIC, VENUS 110s, VENUS 110s PLUS, KUOKI 110s, MISS WOOD and OLYMPIA, and 150 mm on the SWISS.

The second figure to assess is the weight, together with the floor structure that carries it. MISS WOOD weighs 125 kg, VENUS 90s CLASSIC and SWISS weigh 145 kg, VENUS 110s and VENUS 110s PLUS weigh 165 kg, KUOKI 110s weighs 250 kg.

Clearances from combustible materials, such as wooden walls, furniture and curtains, are given in the manual of each model and change from one appliance to another. The technician's site visit brings together chimney flue, weight and clearances, and establishes whether and where the wood burning stove can stand in the living room.

A WOOD BURNING STOVE THAT FURNISHES THE LIVING ROOM

In a living room the wood burning stove stays in view all year round, even when it is off. The VENUS 90s CLASSIC and VENUS 110s are available in Soap Stone and Matt Black finishes. The VENUS 110s PLUS has technical stoneware cladding, in Soap Stone, Nero Venato and Moka. On all three the view of the flame is wide and panoramic.

The VENUS 110s and VENUS 110s PLUS have a large built-in log compartment below the firebox: the wood for the evening stays next to the stove and in order, inside the same structure. The VENUS 90s CLASSIC, 78 cm high, rests on a removable steel base.
