Wood burning fireplace with back boiler: heat output and heated area

A wood burning fireplace with back boiler carries the heat of the fire to the home's heating system: part of it goes to the water in the system, part of it stays in the room where the fireplace is installed. Klover makes six thermo fireplaces: four wood burning, ZEUS FRONTAL, ZEUS CORNER R, ZEUS CORNER L and TKR 27s, and two pellet, PELLET FIRE PLACE 160s and PELLET FIRE PLACE 240s.

For all four Klover wood thermo fireplaces the product sheet declares the same heated area: 220 m². The same value is declared by PELLET FIRE PLACE 240s, while PELLET FIRE PLACE 160s declares 150 m². An area of 150 m² therefore falls within the one declared by all six models.

The square meters go together with the heat output, which in a thermo fireplace is split into two figures: heat to the heating system and heat to the room.

The nominal heat output to water is the heat the thermo fireplace passes to the heating system, and from there to the other rooms of the home. The nominal heat output to the room is the heat that directly warms the room where the thermo fireplace is installed.

ZEUS FRONTAL, ZEUS CORNER R and ZEUS CORNER L declare 10 kW to water and 5.5 kW to the room. TKR 27s declares 10 kW to water and 5.6 kW to the room. The declared efficiency is the same for all four Klover wood thermo fireplaces: 89.4%.

With 10 kW going to water, the larger part of the output of Klover wood thermo fireplaces reaches the heating system, while the fire stays visible in the room.

The ZEUS line comes in three versions with the same output data: ZEUS FRONTAL, with a full front view of the fire, ZEUS CORNER R, right corner, and ZEUS CORNER L, left corner. ZEUS FRONTAL measures 90x77x152 cm and weighs 465 kg; the two corner versions measure 98x77x152 cm and weigh 475 kg. The flue outlet of all three has a diameter of 200 mm.

The combustion chamber is lined with white refractory with high thermal inertia, which gives the flame strong brightness. The lift up door also opens on a hinge, the combustion air has millimetric adjustment and the base has adjustable feet, for a stable and level installation.

The structure is removable, for quick and tidy maintenance, and the connection to the heating system is made with the optional hydraulic kit. The product sheets suggest the ZEUS line for contemporary interiors, open spaces and rooms with a strong architectural character.

TKR 27s brings the same declared heated area as the ZEUS line, 220 m², in a compact format. It measures 99.9x61x150 cm, weighs 370 kg and has a 250 mm flue outlet. The combustion chamber measures 680x380x390 mm and has a refractory base, for a stable flame.

The TKR 27s product sheet speaks of a fast and steady thermal response. The combustion air control is automatic, the recirculation pump is built in and the connection to the heating system goes through the optional hydraulic kit. The door is a lift up door that also opens on a hinge.

The base on wheels makes installation easy. The product sheet suggests TKR 27s for contemporary living areas, compact open spaces and technical rooms, where it brings heat without interfering with the style of the room.

All four Klover wood thermo fireplaces have the Sistema Sicuro Top, the system patented by Klover to connect wood burning products to the home's heating system. It is based on the bain-marie principle: the heating system works with a closed expansion vessel, while the thermo fireplace works with an open vessel at zero pressure.

The result, as the page on Klover technologies explains, is that even if the water boils there is no risk of overpressure. An overflow pipe discharges the excess water into the upper tank, and topping up can be automatic or manual, depending on the model.

In the ZEUS line the Sistema Sicuro Top is made entirely of stainless steel and is removable. The TKR 27s product sheet adds that it protects the heating circuit continuously and ensures stable operation over time.

Alongside the wood thermo fireplaces, Klover makes two pellet thermo fireplaces. PELLET FIRE PLACE 160s declares 9.6 kW to water and 2.9 kW to the room, for a heated area of 150 m². PELLET FIRE PLACE 240s declares 11.6 kW to water and 3.4 kW to the room, for 220 m². The declared efficiency of both is 93%, and the energy class is A+ for PELLET FIRE PLACE 160s and A++ for PELLET FIRE PLACE 240s.

The pellets come from a tank of 25 kg on PELLET FIRE PLACE 160s and 62 kg on PELLET FIRE PLACE 240s, loaded from the front with a drawer. The hydraulic kit with circulator comes as standard, the controls run through a touchscreen display and the double door has a cool outer glass. PELLET FIRE PLACE 240s can also produce domestic hot water. The finishes are Inox, Avorio, Bronze and Matt Black.
