Ducted pellet stove: one stove that heats more rooms

WHAT DUCTED MEANS

A ducted pellet stove sends warm air beyond the room where it stands. Inside it has a second fan that pushes part of the heated air into pipes hidden in the wall or in the false ceiling, and from there the air comes out into another room, through a vent. The fire remains one, the heat reaches more points of the house.

It is the middle ground between a normal stove, which heats the room where it stands, and a thermo-stove, which instead heats the water of the radiators. Here air moves, not water, and this changes two things: the plumbing system does not need to be touched, and the air flow is adjusted room by room.

Thirty-six Klover models published in the catalogue declare ducting, among stoves, inserts and monoblocs.

HOW MANY ROOMS IT CAN HEAT

The limit is not the number of pipes, it is the output. Every room added takes a share of the warm air that before stayed entirely in the main room, so the stove is chosen on the sum of the volumes to be heated, not on the volume of the room where it will be installed.

In the Klover range the adjustment is fine: the AURA 120s features Cyclone ducted ventilation with five levels, which distributes the flow between the main room and the ducted outlets. The ONE 10s offers the kit MULTI AIR as optional equipment.

The question that comes up most often is how many outlets are needed. Two is the most common configuration, one in the room where the stove stands and one in the room next door, and it is also the most balanced: the air splits between two short routes and neither of them runs short of flow. As the number rises the calculation becomes serious, because the same air has to be enough for everyone.

Distance counts as much as output. The longer the pipe and the more bends it has, the more warm air is lost along the way: the route is designed together with the installer, before deciding where the stove goes.

THE MODELS AND THE OUTPUTS

Klover ductable pellet stoves cover the range from small to medium homes:

  • AURA 80s, 7.8 kW, efficiency 95.4%, the highest of the ductable range
  • ONE 8s, 7.8 kW, efficiency 93%
  • VENUS 110s, 8.4 kW, efficiency 92%
  • VERTICAL 100s, 9.3 kW, efficiency 90%
  • AURA 100s, ASTRA 100s and DIVA SLIM AIR 100s, 9.7 kW, efficiency 94%
  • ONE 10s, 10 kW, efficiency 92%
  • AURA 120s and OMEGA 120s, 11.7 kW, efficiency 94%

Efficiency says how much of the pellet becomes useful heat. On a ducted stove it weighs twice as much, because that heat does not have to heat a single room.

WHEN THE WALL IS NARROW: THE DUCTED SLIM

Ducting is not reserved for large stoves. The DIVA SLIM AIR 100s delivers 9.7 kW and 94% efficiency in a slim body, and its data sheet declares the possibility of ducted ventilation. It exists in three finishes, DIVA SLIM AIR 100s STONE and WOOD besides the base version.

It is the solution for corridors and for passage walls, where a stove of normal depth would not fit and where the right wall runs to carry the air into the room next door.

INSIDE THE FIREPLACE: THE DUCTED INSERTS

Those who already have an open fireplace can duct without putting a stove in the middle of the room. The STARBOX 650s and STARBOX UP 650s pellet inserts deliver 7.7 kW with 92% efficiency and are installed in the recess of the existing fireplace: the appliance disappears into the masonry and only the glass and the vents remain visible.

In the same family there are ORION 800, ORION CORNER in the right and left versions, and FRONTAL BLOK 950, all ductable.

NOISE, WHICH IS THE FIRST THING NOTICED

A ducted stove has one more fan, and noise is the reason why some people regret it. In the Serie ONE the front ventilation is silent and can be switched off: ventilation in the room can be turned off and the air can be left to go where it is needed, which at night, in a bedroom, is exactly what is sought.

WHAT IS NEEDED TO INSTALL IT

Compared with a normal stove little changes in terms of flue gas exhaust, which stays the usual one. What changes is the work on the walls: the ducting pipes have to be routed through, and the right moment to decide it is before, not after. In a house under renovation the route hides without effort; once the work is finished the possible paths shrink, and the position of the stove ends up being decided by the pipe instead of by the living room.

A ducted stove does not replace the heating system, it flanks it where the pipe arrives. The complete data sheets with the outputs and efficiencies of every model are on klover.it, and a quote can be requested from every product page.
